Margaret Barry

Everyone who loves folk music and ballads should know Margaret Barry. She was one of the best traditional Irish singers I know. I learned about her through Alan Lomax, one of the great field collectors of folk music. I still bless the day I came across this wonderful singer.

She was born in a family of travelers and musicians. In fact both of her parents were street musicians and so it was meant to be that Margaret Barry became a musician herself.

At the age of sixteen she left home and started street singing. It didn't took long before she became a well known figure in the Irish pubs of London, but also did she sing on market squares and even sporting events.
